WÜRZBURG

Devoutness and Decadence

The dark ages are enlightened by the glorious reign of the mighty prince-bishops, men of the cloth with spiritual and worldly power. Such „God given“ divinity deserved truly majestic accommodation.

They built St. Mary’s Fortification in the 13th century, the “Residence” in the 18th century and, in the course of time, 64 churches, one of which, to this day, is still the Seat of the Bishop.

For photographers, St. Mary’s Fortress offers a unique and breathtaking perspective, with its massive construction reflected in the Main River.

The “Residence”, a part of the UNESCO world heritage, presents to us the facts that these spiritual rulers were anything other than gracious, conservative and humble.

In the “Residence”, you find out how cannon barrel-maker Balthasar Neumann became architect, why the famous stucco artist Antonio Bossi looks so grim and what forced the renowned painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo to flee from Würzburg.

Prince Bishops knew how to live well. The massive wine cellars below the Residenz still offer delicious regional wines bottled in the famous „Bocksbeutel“ today.

Having digested historical facts and interesting gossip, we enjoy discovering this metropolitan university town, we listen to a warning from the dead to the living and learn what happened to unfaithful husbands.

After all these cultural activities enjoy the „Beach“ or „Shop till you drop“!
